The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the entire California State Prison–Sacramento (CSP-SAC) community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Correctional Officer Marcus Monzon, who passed away on December 3, 2025. His passing marks a profound moment of grief for colleagues, friends, and loved ones who knew him as a dedicated public servant and a man of integrity, commitment, and quiet strength.
Officer Monzon began his journey with CDCR in April 2024 at the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center in Galt. From the beginning, he approached his training with determination, discipline, and a strong sense of purpose. After graduating from the Basic Correctional Officer Academy, he joined the staff at California State Prison–Sacramento in July 2024, quickly earning the respect of peers and supervisors alike.
Though his time in service was shorter than anyone could have imagined, Marcus made a lasting impact. Colleagues describe him as a dependable team member—steady in his duties, thoughtful in his interactions, and committed to doing his job with professionalism and care. His presence brought reassurance to those who worked alongside him, and his willingness to support others reflected the compassion he carried both on and off the job.
Marcus’s passing comes during a difficult period for CDCR, as the department also mourns several other staff members recently lost: Juan Carlos Garcia Espinoza, Chad O’Brion, Sharon King, Peter Garcia, and Ron Allen. Yet Officer Monzon’s death is felt uniquely and deeply by those who knew him personally and saw the promise of a meaningful career dedicated to service.
Beyond the uniform, Marcus was a cherished family member and friend. Those close to him remember his humility, his kindness, and the quiet reliability that made him someone others could count on. He valued connection, respected everyone he encountered, and carried himself with the dignity of a person who truly understood the importance of his role.
As CSP-SAC and the broader CDCR community await funeral details, tributes and remembrances will continue to be shared through official CDCR channels, honoring the legacy of a young officer whose life touched many. Though his time with the department was far too short, his commitment to public safety and service will not be forgotten.
To Marcus’s family, colleagues, and all who mourn him, may you find comfort in knowing he served with honor, compassion, and heart. His memory will live on in the lives he touched and in the institution he helped strengthen through his dedication. May he rest in peace.
